The
Greatest Gift
By Keith Haugen
There was no Santa on that first Christmas
Eve
Yet there were gifts to give and to receive
No bright lights, no sleigh bells, no reindeer, no snow
Just a Babe in a manger, beneath a heavenly glow
There was no Santa on that first Christmas
Eve
Just a promise for those who would believe
No candy, no tinsel, no toys or mistletoe
Just a mother and her Baby, beneath that heavenly glow
There were stars in the sky
Angels caroled on high
And the world was filled with love
? from up above
There was love in that manger so bare
A special love for all of us to share
So if you believe that God is love
And good things come from up above
Then you will know, if you believe,
It's better to give than to receive
And His love is the Greatest Gift of all.
Yes, His love is the Greatest Gift of all.

"The Greatest Gift" was Keith & Carmen's 1984 gift to all the Island radio stations that play music. It was one of the first in the series of Keith Haugen Christmas songs and started a project to write at least one new Christmas song every year. It was recorded and released in 1988 on the EP Cassette Single called "Cease Fire" and Other New Christmas Songs. It was re-released in 1996 on "The Village Where I Went To School."
