Chasing Rainbows

By Keith Haugen

Rainbows, Rainbows, Rainbows of Hawai`i

All the colors of the rainbow
In Hawai`i they spell friendship
Bands of green and red and yellow
Painted on the mountain mist

Chasing rainbows in Hawai`i
With the ones you love so dear
It's a favorite Island pastime
Any season of the year

Yes, rainbows are everywhere in Hawai`i
Bands of nature's colors
Arched from end to end
And rainbows are special in Hawai`i
So follow the rainbow
And find a friend

Inspired by a natural phenomena . . . that rainbows ARE everywhere in Hawai`i, this was originally written as a jingle for an advertising client. When it was turned down, Keith added another verse and recorded it with the Waimanalo Keikis in 1979. Those fortunate enough to notice them will see rainbows almost every day of their lives. It is the composer's hope that at the end of your rainbow, you'll find something even more preicous than a pot of gold. The song was used by Hawaiian Telephone Co. as the theme music on a float that won the Governor's Trophy (First Prize) in the Kamehameha Day Parade. It was the title song of Keith & Carmen's first LP. It has also been recorded by Lanakila Rittenband. And it was selected by a curriculum committee at the University of Hawai`i and was published in a State DOE music textbook in the 80s.
